Monachopsis shows us the world of Debby, a young woman who feels alienated from her environment and in need of a sense of physical existence. Despite all her efforts she is unable to truly bond with the people around her. After losing her job she drowns herself in alcohol and loud music. Then she meets Sophie. At last she feels connected, and friendship ensues. Albeit short-lived ...

Liesbet developed her own, very distinctive animation technique, through which she conveyed the leading character's alienation and confusion. The director expressed Debby's inability to make and maintain connections by rendering the other characters slightly out of focus.
